kid, why don't you take a rest and let diva answer it. she said she's a researcher herself. And I know all this stuff because I hold a PhD, which I stated a couple of times here.

1. how long does it take on an average to get tenure-track and how rigged the entire game is.

publishing trivial results, join prominent committees, sucking up to professors who might handle your tenure case.

2. What happens when you are 40, and still waiting for a tenure(true in most cases) with a subsistence salary. Your spouse will have to work too, to support a decent lifestyle.

3. would you put it down to 'I love the work I do, and don't mind that everybody looks down on me, even though they don't have 1% of the knowledge I do.'?

This is not a simple case of I'll work on stuff I love, and be happy with whatever little they pay me. The working hours are long, if you are not assertive about your space.

Unless you are on course for a solid tenure.. just bail out of PhD is what I advise everyone who asks me.

Also, its the researchers who live in a bubble, or better an echo chamber. In the real world, people work and solve real problems, most of them without PhDs.

next time try picking up a science journal and read it regularly for a couple of years. and note down the bunch of trivial results they publish. and the price they charge for reading the content, along with the price to publish them.

If there ever was an example of highway robbery, this would be it. The entire system is rigged to benefit the older and lazier professors.. who get paid for doing almost nothing.

that's why if you really want to get a PhD, its easy to get one.. but the question you should ask is, Do I need a PhD? The answer, if you know the reality, is mostly No.

Also, with the financial situation in endowment boards of many universities, and the declining support for science by the US govt, the tenureship will be cut in many departments.

Guys, girls, who were waiting for so long for their chance will end up with a lemon in their hands.

thats why I said you need comprehension skills, and a little humility.

what I said was I dropped out of the stupid race for tenure track because I wasn't good enough to get one before I hit 30, like extremely gifted candidates do.

One thing I can say for sure is, you can never become rich by doing research (that too in academics) but that doesn't mean it's illusionless
