There is perhaps more Diego Maradona toCristiano Ronaldo than there is to Lionel Messi. This will bring out the naysayers in droves, but the Portuguese superstar's pyrotechnics on Tuesday night at what is forbiddingly known as the Zlatan Arena in Sweden, only reinforced the fact that there are very rare times in footballwhen the individual soars above the system and the team to grab the occasion and make it his own. And it takes a special kind of player with a strange kind of drive to do it. 

In his time, the original Argentine master did it almost all the time - mostly single-handedly, chest thrust out, swagger in his run and murder on his mind as he waged his singular battle with a world that was constantly at odds with him. This is Ronaldo's time now. He has appropriated this very vital aspect that was once special to Maradona. 

No player in modern football played the 'Us versus the World' card better to spur himself, his team, nation or club than Maradona did. Ronaldo is doing the same, albeit in a different dimension: It is more like, 'Me versus the World', and watching it is proving a riveting experience. Unlike Maradona though, there is no misguided politics to his game, only unabashed ambition to be the best and the constant rage that the fact is not easily accepted. 

For all his skill and brilliance, not even Messi, the man who the world regards as the new Maradona, can match that naked drive. Messi and his system play the opposing team; Ronaldo takes on the world too. And it becomes a thing of powerful beauty. 

"I know Portugal needed me in these matches and I showed that I am here," was what he said after the game, but it was his reaction after his second goal that may have given us a peep into what he's been thinking all these years. Was it "I am here," or was it "I own your home" that he mouthed on the Zlatan Arena goalline? Either way, it was the outburst of a player who, in another age, would have defined an era, but is constantly battling to make this one his own. 

It is not just about his hat-trick alone. Ronaldo does that so often, we've lost count. It is more about being the person of character in such punishing conditions. The cauldron of a World Cup play-off second leg can rattle lesser men as history would tell us. 

In 1994, an entire generation of wonderfully-talented French players was lost to memory since they allowed Hristo Stoichkov's Bulgaria to prevail in the dying minutes of a bitterly-fought duel - all due to a silly back pass. David Ginola was widely held responsible for the gaffe and he was never played for France again. 

In Sweden, in his own backyard, Zlatan Ibrahimovic was feeling that way for most part of the game, till he redeemed himself to an extent when his two goals in a space of four minutes suddenly threw up an interesting conundrum. 

Over the past month, a surefire way to kick up a sporting debate was to ask who you wanted to see at the World Cup: Zlatan or Ronaldo? 

The debate would split lovers of football vertically down the middle and while there was growing affection for Zlatan and his ways, there was distant admiration for Ronaldo. When the moment arrived, the proud Portuguese forced the issue like no other. Even Zlatan could do little but stand, watch and applaud.
