Olympian Heena Sidhu capped a brilliant year by winning the women’s air pistol gold in the World Cup Final in Munich, Germany, on Sunday.

Qualifying in the third place with a total of 384, two points behind leaders —former World and Olympic champion Olena Kostevych of Ukraine and Alejandra Zavala of Mexico — Heena found her best form in the final.

In fact, Heenawas below par with her first two shots of 9.3 but shot 10 or more in 17 of her next 18 shots. She jumped into the lead after eight shots and ended up with a total of 203.8 in the final to beat the reigning World champion Zorana Arunovic of Serbia by 5.2 points.

Meanwhile, Lajja Gauswami shot 435.5 and missed the bronze medal by 0.3 point in women’s 50m rifle 3-position event.

The World Cup silver medallist in Granada, the 25-year-old Lajja was beaten to the medal by three-time World Cup Final gold medallist Wu Liuxi of China.

Women: 10m air pistol: 1. Heena Sidhu 203.8 (384); 2. Zorana Arunovic (Srb) 198.6 (382); 3. Viktoria Chaika (Blr) 176.8 (381).

50m rifle 3-position: 1. Petra Zublasing (Ita) 462.7 (585); 2. Andrea Arsovic (Srb) 457.9 (587); 3. Wu Liuxi (Chn) 446.4 (585); 4. Lajja Gauswami 435.5 (581).

HYDERABAD: Anup Kumar Yama's gold quest finally came true on Saturday when the ace Indian skater won the yellow metal at the 2013 World Inline Artistic Championship in Taiwan.

The 29-year-old Anup, who had the distinction of being the first Indian skater to win a bronze medal in Inline Artistic Category at the 2012 World Roller-skating Championship in New Zealand, fulfilled his life-long dream of winning a gold medal and hearing the National Anthem being played during the prize distribution ceremony.

On Saturday, Anup defeated former world champions Carlos Urquia of Argentina and Lee Chun of Chinese Taipei to clinch the top honours. Anup finished with score of 470.7, while Carlos, who had 458, had to be content with the silver. Lee got a score of 440 to take home the bronze.

Anup is a second generation skater who started at the tender age of four and has since then breached several frontiers. He is the first sportsman to showcase Indian talent in roller-skating to the world.

Anup has several firsts to his credit and even after being in the sport for more than two decades, he continues to enthrall the lovers of the sport with his awe-inspiring combination spins, signature style triple jumps and perfect landings.

The Hyderabadi has forged a strong international fan following as he is the only Indian to win a gold and a bronze at the World Championships. He also claimed five gold, three silver and nine bronze medals at the Asian level. Anup's cabinet is filled with 228 gold medals he has garnered over the years on the domestic circuit.

Anup, who is the only skater from the country to have participated in seven World Championships, has the unique distinction of being the top ranked skater in the country. He is ranked second in Asia and third at the world level.

Coached by his father Veeresh Yama, a former skater and chairman of the AP Artistic Technical Committee, Anup is blessed with a hunger for excellence which has spurred him on over the years.
