Telangana Professionals Cry Foul Over 'discrimination' In Top It Compa

Even as the state bifurcation controversy rages on, a little known organization claiming to represent the interests of the IT professionals from the Telangana region -- the newly formed Telangana Information Technology Association (TITA) -- on Sunday released a study to prove its point that techies from the Telangana region have been facing discrimination for a long time.

According to TITA, its study of 150 IT projects of the top 50 IT companies in Hyderabad, found that 60% of the techies who get to work on these projects are from the Seemandhra region, while a meagre 16% are from Telangana and the rest from other states. Big names such as IBM, Infosys, Wipro, HSBC, Tata Consultancy Services, Microsoft, Deloitte and Accenture among others featured in the study.

"We also found out that 66% of the top officials in the human resources (HR) departments of these IT companies belong to the Seemandhra region and they are the ones who recruit people for different projects. Hence, there is no doubt that they are biased towards people from their own region and this has been going on for years now," TITA president Sundeep Kumar Makthala said.

"I have experienced that appraisals and promotions of deserving IT professionals have been stalled or delayed just because they hailed from Telangana districts. While, in IT industries, every one acts as if they are 'professional' but they do discriminate in the name of region," a disgruntled techie and TITA member said.

TITA honorary president and advisior V Prakash pointed out that Telangana techies are relegated to lower end jobs because a majority of the top slots or key decision making positions are occupied by Seemandhra techies who tend to promote Seemandhra techies for higher end work.

In a bid to try and eliminate this gap, TITA will be conducting mentorship programmes to boost the skill sets of Telangana techies, Prakash said, adding: "We will provide training in new technologies and areas such as cloud, big data, mobility etc that will help them rise in their organizations".

TITA, which claims to have 3,000 techies and students as members, is also planning to reach out to around 200 colleges to conduct programmes to create awareness about job opportunities in the IT sector.
