November 13:

An MBBS second year student of Sri Devaraj Medical College in Karnataka, was set fire by alleged co-students yesterday night. for raising pro Telangana slogans. The incident took place at Tamaka locality Gulpet police limits of Kolar of Karnataka.

The victim is identified as Kamesh alias Sai Prasad, second year MBBS student of Sri Devaraj Medical College, Tamaka, Kolar and resident of Kalwakuthy in Mehbubnagar district.

There were allegations that the victim was assaulted by fellow Telugu students who are also pursuing medicine course in the same college. The regional differences might have been led to set ablaze the victim. However, the Kolar police denied the allegations.

There were allegations that the victim had arguments with other students who belonging to Rayalaseema region. After the victim allegedly raised slogans of `Jai Telangana’ in the campus, the other students of Rayalaseema objected him and they had arguments.

Around 10.30 pm yesterday, Sai Prasad came out from his rented house located Tamaka locality that is nearby his medical college. While the victim walking toward to an isolated place, two unknown persons followed him. Suddenly, the duo tried to snatch gold chain from the victim’s neck. The victim also resisted the duo. Meantime, the accused who carried inflammable liquid poured the victim and set him ablaze,’’ said the Superintendent of Police (SP), Kolar, Ram Niwas Sepat.

Police said that one of the room-mates noticed the victim who was lying on the ground near his rented house in Tamaka receiving serious burn injurers and alerted the police. Gulpet police came to the spot and shifted the victim to King George Hospital in Bangalore.

The victim received at least 50 per cent burn injures in the incident.

Meanwhile, the TJAC leaders in the city alleged that the victim was an innocent and Rayalaseema region students of the same college were involved in trying to kill the victim who shouted `Jai Telangana’ slogans.

Based on the complaint, Gulpet police registered a case under section of 397 (Robbery or dacoity, with attempt to cause death or grievous hurt) of the IPC and investigating the case.
