In a Harris Shield school cricket game, Prithvi Shaw of Rizvi Springfield set a new tournament record by smashing 546 runs in just 330 balls against St Francis D'Assisi. It is also the highest score by an Indian in any grade of cricket.

It is the first quintuple hundred in junior games since 1956-57, and the first in all grades of cricket since Brian Lara set the new First Class record with 501* in 1994.

Shaw is the first batsman to pass 500 runs in an innings in the Harris Shield, an annual fixture that draws great interest among those looking out for the next big cricketing talent from Mumbai. It was in the same Harris Shield competition that Tendulkar and Vinod Kambli struck a 664-run partnership for their school in 1988, with both batsmen returning with unbeaten triple-centuries.

"I am feeling good," Shaw told TV channel Times Now. "It is a good score for me and my team. Our coach just asked me to concentrate on every ball. The only plan was to score as many runs as we could.

"I want to continue like this in future also," he added. 20131120_173275.jpgImpressed by Shaw's batting, Sachin Tendulkar gifted him an SG bat.

Shaw, aged 14, was batting 257 overnight. He had looked set to achieve the rare quadruple, but he pushed on for a rarer quintuple that would now fetch him comparisons with other teenaged prodigies, including one who retired recently after 29 years of butchering bowlers around the world.

In all, Shaw faced 330 balls, struck 85 fours and five sixes. The innings was merely 367 minutes long, giving you a good indication of his striking rate—and perhaps also of D'Assisi's bowling.

A SPECIAL TALENT

He has been marked out as a player to watch out for. In May, Times of India quoted Julian Wood, an English county player and coach, as saying that Shaw could be "the best in the world".

"Five years ago, we were playing a match at the MIG. They put him to bat and he scored 73 against us and I said this is a very, very special boy. I met his father and I told him I will sponsor him. You don't see talent like that everyday at such a young age. I told him he should come to England one day," said Wood.

Shaw has impressed even Tendulkar. A Rediff story says: "Tendulkar first heard about Shaw nearly two years back after the right-hander scored runs aplenty, destroying every bowling attack that squared up against him. The maestro had just completed his batting net sessions at the Mumbai Cricket Association ground in Bandra-Kurla complex in suburban Mumbai, when the sight of a 11-year-old displaying qualities of a top-notch batsman in the nets made him stop in his tracks. Impressed by Shaw's batting, Tendulkar gifted him an SG bat that suited his size. The same company now sponsors his cricketing gear."
