A court in Delhi has found the parents of school girl Aarushi Talwar guilty of murdering her and their domestic servant Hemraj. Despite the verdict, India's "most talked-about crime" for years leaves many unanswered questions, reports the BBC's Geeta Pandey.

The 14-year-old only daughter of dentist couple Rajesh and Nupur Talwar, Aarushi was found dead on the morning of 16 May 2008 in her bed at home in the affluent Delhi suburb, Noida, with her throat slit and a fatal head injury. Her parents told the police they were sleeping in the next room when the murder was committed. Initially it was suspected that Hemraj could be the murderer, until his bludgeoned body was found on the roof of the family house a day later.

After several twists and turns in the case, the Talwars were charged with murder, destruction of evidence and misleading the investigations. The couple denied all the charges and say they will continue to "fight for justice".

Both were arrested - at different times - and spent weeks in jail, before being bailed while proceedings against them continued.

Now they face many years behind bars.

What is the Aarushi Talwar murder case?:

14-year-old Aarushi Talwar was the only daughter of Rajesh and Nupur Talwar. A class IX student at a reputed Noida school, she was found murdered at the family’s home in Noida’s Jalvayu Vihar in May 2008.  Her throat was slit and she had a fatal head injury. She was killed the day before her birthday.

The local police declared the family’s missing domestic helper, Hemraj, as the prime suspect. A day later, his body, too, was found on the terrace of the Talwars’ home.

Key developments in the case:

The parents maintained their innocence in both deaths and said they would fight until they get justice for their daughter’s murder.

In January 2011, Mr. Talwar went to the special CBI court in Ghaziabad to demand a fresh probe into the murder. He was attacked by an assailant with a cleaver outside the premises.

On Feb. 9, 2011, the CBI court charged the couple, prompting Mr. Talwar to say, “There is no justice in this banana republic.” In March that year, the Supreme Court turned down a request by the Talwars to have their trial moved to Delhi from the Ghaziabad court. Their trial began that month. Mrs. Talwar’s absence from the court’s proceedings led to the issuance of non-bailable warrants against her in the case following which she was arrested in April. Mr. Talwar, meanwhile was released on bail.

Arguments in the double murder trial began May 11, 2011 when the couple was formally charged with the murders of both their daughter Aarushi and domestic helper Hemraj. They are also charged with destruction of evidence and Mr. Talwar is accused of misleading investigators. They have denied all allegations of wrongdoing. Mrs. Talwar was later granted bail by the Supreme Court in September that year.

The hearings in the case went on for a year as the prosecution recorded statements of several witnesses including doctors and police officers related to the case. Last month, the prosecution concluded its final arguments, accusing the parents of murdering their daughter and domestic help and misleading investigators.

The special CBI court in Ghaziabad found the couple guilty of the double murder on Nov. 25, 2013.
