Timing: rain is expected to transition to freezing rain and sleet this afternoon and continue through Friday morning. Main impact: ice and sleet accumulations will create very dangerous travel conditions on area roads, bridges and overpasses. Significant travel impacts are possible and some roadways may become impassable Thursday night through Friday afternoon. Other impacts: ice accumulations may bring down trees and power lines. Power outages may last for more than a day in some communities. Accumulation, freezing rain or ice accumulation of a quarter to over a half inch is expected. Sleet accumulation of up to one half inch is possible. Temperatures will remain below freezing preventing ice from melting away. Recommended actions A significant winter storm is forecast to occur. Preparations to protect life and property should be completed by Thursday afternoon. Prepare for the possibility of power outages and have some Non-perishable food and water on hand. Do not travel Thursday night and Friday morning unless it is an emergency. If you must travel, keep an extra blanket, flashlight, food, and water in your vehicle in case you become stranded. Visit the Environmental Protection Agency for a complete list of recommended products. Sand to improve traction. Snow shovels and other snow removal equipment. Sufficient heating fuel. You may become isolated in your home and regular fuel sources may be cut off. Store a good supply of dry, seasoned wood for your fireplace or wood-burning stove. Overexertion can bring on a heart attack - a major cause of death in the winter. If you must shovel snow, stretch before going outside. Keep dry. Change wet clothing frequently to prevent a loss of body heat. Wet clothing loses all of its insulating value and transmits heat rapidly. Watch for signs of frostbite. These include loss of feeling and white or pale appearance in extremities such as fingers, toes, ear lobes, and the tip of the nose. If symptoms are detected, get medical help immediately.
