During the ongoing discussion over the Telangana Bill in the Assembly, Jaya Prakash Narayan questioned as to which region he belonged. Having spent his childhood in Maharashtra, JP did his schooling from coastandhra, completed his IAS training in Karimnagar and later got voted to the Assembly from Hyderabad. “So where do I belong?” he asked. He expressed his angst that the political situation in the state was going through a critical phase. The impending bifurcation has inflamed the verdant lands of the state, he said. Confessing that he has been spending many sleepless nights over bifurcation, he said the parties in the state were as good as dead. What prevailed was regionalism, Jaya Prakash Narayan said. Bifurcation had ignited many hopes and fears among Telugu people and hence a discussion without the involvement of political parties was necessary he said. Of the seven points that were promised to the Telangana people, only five have been implemented resulting in their discontentment, noted JP. It was not fair to go on the word given to people, he warned. Further JP said that bifurcation was necessary as the feelings of regionalism have increased among people. JP blamed the central government for instigating the sentiments of Telugu people and creating a chasm between them. He said the gap was so wide now that little could be done to salvage the situation. The situation has reached a point of no return and if the government now tries to keep the state united, it could lead to dire consequences, cautioned JP.
