i think it is not necessary to give original...it takes only 14 days. best is to go to IRS field office and apply there for ITIN.

The process is that, u need to file your 2013 year tax return along with application for ITIN. Some body did it last year and i dont remember it exactly.

but sure u need to file both tax return and application itin together in the same envelope.

you need to apply for ITIN, while filing your tax returns if both H1 and H4. Earlier the Tax consultants used to file for you, but now they changed the process i guess you need to send docs like application form visa copy and all to Austin TX. That is how i filed last year . they will take time to give ur ITIN number .
