me being a mother can understand her pain, how it feels when ur kids are all left alone no one to take care.

Chetana Guduru reserved her strongest passions for the classroom.

The scholarly 17-year-old was shy, rarely spoke above a whisper and normally had her nose in a book except when one of her teachers asked a question. Immediately, her arm would shoot up.

Chetana's academic talent earned the Oviedo girl acceptance into a variety of colleges, but it also garnered the admiration of her Seminole High School fellow seniors, who were stunned to learn Monday that she had been shot to death.

The 116 seniors of the school's International Baccalaureate program were herded into a classroom during sixth period Monday and clung to one another as they mourned their classmate's slaying.

"Half of us feel angry and upset. A lot of us are confused. Several of us are feeling depressed and numb," said classmate Nicholas Fajardo. "We have difficulty concentrating in class, and we are trying to find ways to cope with her death."

Oviedo police said Chetana died hours after her mother, Sujatha Guduru, shot the teenager in the head while she lay in her mother's bed, according to a charging affidavit.

Sujatha Guduru was found on the floor next to the bed with a gunshot wound to the chest.

The 44-year-old woman remained hospitalized under guard at Orlando Regional Medical Center on Tuesday while facing a charge of first-degree murder.

Once she's well enough, she'll be moved to the Orange County Jail, then likely extradited to the Seminole County Jail.

"My sister and niece — they are both shot. She is bleeding," said Guduru's brother, Prasad Chittaluru, in a recording of his 911 call. "Please, ma'am, please."

Chittaluru found them inside their Farmingham Court home in the Waverlee Woods subdivision about 7:20a.m. after reading an email from his sister saying she was planning a homicide-suicide that morning, according to Oviedo police Lt. Mike Beavers.

"They are still breathing," Chittaluru told the dispatcher, who directed him to find something to wipe the blood from his niece's mouth. But he broke down when Chetana started gurgling blood.

"I don't know how to do this," he said. "Please, baby, wake up."

Police arrived minutes later.

Guduru said she killed her daughter fearing no one would care for her after she committed suicide. At least one bullet hit the teen in the face.

Police are still not sure why Guduru wanted to kill herself, Beavers said. She told detectives that she shot her daughter twice, then turned the gun on herself.

Guduru told investigators she had been planning it for a few weeks and on Jan.21 had bought the .38-caliber revolver she used on her daughter. She picked it up from an undisclosed seller Saturday.

Assistant State Attorney Stacey Salmons said her office would likely present the case to a grand jury.

"I do not believe we are going to have any problems being able to prosecute," Salmons said.

Chetana's father, Rao Guduru, was not home at the time and drove Monday from Atlanta to be with his family. He and Chittaluru declined interview requests.

As an IB student, Chetana could be seen lugging around a backpack fat with books as she walked to and from her advanced classes with other high-achieving classmates.

"The student was very, very intelligent and very bright," Michael Lawrence, a spokesman for Seminole County Public Schools, said. "She was a very hardworking student."

Chetana has been enrolled in the Seminole school system since at least sixth grade, when she attended Sanford Middle School. She was also an IB student at that school.

That is where Fajardo first met the bashful Chetana. Though she had a slight lisp and was a bit hard of hearing, she participated eagerly in class lessons, and her brilliance would shine forth, he said.

History was one of her favorite subjects, and she spent the summer writing a 4,000-word paper on the origins of the Cold War.

"Out of everyone in the class, she was probably at the top of those getting the IB diploma," Fajardo said.

Chetana didn't miss an opportunity to show kindness. When Fajardo forgot to take notes on a discussion about a Robert Frost poem, Chetana slid her notebook over so he could copy her notes and catch up.

Seminole High School brought in grief counselors for a second day Tuesday to talk with students. On Monday night, some of Chetana's classmates held an memorial on campus to mourn together.

"The students are struggling, but they want the 'Nole Nation' and our community to know that they will overcome this tragedy, TOGETHER, and are asking for prayers for Chetana's family, friends and everyone that knew her," the school said on its Facebook page.

The school is asking students to wear purple — Chetana's favorite color — to school Friday in her honor.
