FRISCO — A woman is accused of killing her 10-year-old son, whose body was found covered in cloth and plastic bags in the bathtub of their home.

Police discovered the body Wednesday when the boy’s concerned father contacted them after he returned home from a business trip.

When officers arrived and asked the mother, Pallavi Dhawan, whether she had killed her son, Arnav, “she nodded yes,” Frisco police Sgt. Brad Merritt said.

The 38-year-old woman has been charged with murder and was being held at the Frisco City Jail. Her bond was set at $50,000, police said.

The Collin County medical examiner’s office conducted an autopsy but had not ruled on a cause of death. It is unclear when Arnav died.

The boy’s father, Sumeet Dhawan, told police he had been on a business trip for three weeks and became concerned about his family when he arrived earlier in the day at the home in the 15000 block of Mountain View Lane.

He said he had received emails from school officials that his son had not attended school for several days. The boy was a fifth-grader at Frisco ISD’s Isbell Elementary School.

Pallavi Dhawan was not at home when police arrived about 6:30 p.m., but she returned while they were there.

When officers asked her about her son, she asked to speak privately with her husband, who became upset during the conversation, Merritt said.

After acknowledging she had killed the boy, the mother indicated a locked room where officers found Arnav’s body after forcing the door open, police said.

“He was lying in the bathtub with a cloth wrapped up to his neck,” Merritt said. Plastic bags were also found around the body.

Police said they aren’t sure of a motive for killing Arnav and don’t know whether his mother has a history of mental illness.

Pallavi Dhawan’s attorney, David Finn, said she has denied that she admitted killing her son.

The “alleged confession or admission is fiction,” he said. “It didn’t happen.”

Finn said that she did nod when officers asked whether the boy was in the bedroom but that she did not indicate she was responsible.

He said Pallavi Dhawan is very emotional over her son’s death.

“She is despondent,” he said. “The entire family, they are very emotional, heartsick over this.”

The family has had no involvement with Child Protective Services, but the agency is working with police to investigate Arnav’s death, spokeswoman Shari Pulliam said.

Arnav was an only child and lived at the home with his parents, officials said.

Extra counselors were sent to Isbell Elementary on Thursday to help students and staff members. Parents were notified of the death in a letter from Principal Serita Dodson.

“The most important thing children need is to have an opportunity to be heard and to be able to express their feelings,” she wrote.

Collin County Appraisal District records show that Sumeet Dhawan purchased the home in the Hunters Creek subdivision last July. The 4,300-square-foot-home is appraised at $389,765.

Neighbor Steve Buckley said the family moved in quietly and kept to themselves.

“No one in the neighborhood has ever even met them,” he said. “We never even saw a moving truck. … All of a sudden they were here.”

He said the incident was shocking in what is typically a quiet subdivision.

“It’s very unsettling, especially being next door,” he said. “This is a very quiet neighborhood.”
