Prostitution sting along Watt Avenue nets 29 men, women, minors

A law enforcement sting along Watt Avenue resulted in the arrest of suspected female prostitutes, male johns looking to pay for sex and others jailed on various charges.

A total of 11 women, 16 men and two minors were arrested for prostitution or prostitution-related charges. Another nine arrests were for a variety of criminal charges, some involving drugs, and outstanding warrants.

The sting occurred Wednesday along the busy Watt Avenue corridor from Auburn Boulevard and extending into North Highlands at streets such as Myrtle and Orange Grove avenues.

The area has long been the site of street prostitution. The recent crackdown was in response to business and resident complaints.

The operation used undercover decoys to catch those involved in prostitution. Also, marked squad cars stopped those engaged in suspicious activity.

Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department problem oriented policing teams, north patrol deputies, work release personnel and Sacramento County probation officers conducted the sting.

“Our hope is that by releasing the statistics in an operation like this, those involved in the activities will realize the consequence of their actions,” said sheriff’s spokeswoman Sgt. Lisa Bowman.
