Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Kiran Kumar Reddy on Wednesday said that he was trying to prevent the Congress from taking the 'disastrous' step of dividing the state. When IBN18 Editor-in-Chief Rajdeep Sardesai asked him why he doesn't quit as CM and keeps on protesting, Reddy said, "The situation today in Andhra Pradesh is only because I have continued as the Chief Minister. If I was not the Chief Minister, this thing would have finished a long time ago. The will of the people is what I am reflecting. If the Centre does not listen, I will talk to MLAs, MLCs and MPs and central ministers, we are all together in this fight."

Kiran Reddy on Wednesday held a silent protest at Jantar Mantar against the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh. He also met President Pranab Mukherjee requesting him to ensure that the state remained united. Following is the full transcript of Rajdeep Sardesai's interview with Kiran Reddy:

Rajdeep Sardesai: The fact is that it's your own party which is going to bring the Bill in Parliament, then why stage a mock fight between you and the Centre. Are you trying to become a martyr to the cause?

Kiran Kumar Reddy: If you see my statements after 150 days or 160 days after it was announced, I am clearly for the cause and I will do anything for the cause including resignation from my post or my party. That does not matter now because all of us want to save our state for the future of the people of the state and for the state to be united. We feel if the state is divided, the people of the state are going to suffer. This is a permanent institution, the state is permanent, the people are permanent, the chief minister and others are temporary.

Rajdeep Sardesai: The Congress high command is not listening to you. Tell me what are your realistic options Mr Kiran Kumar Reddy?

Kiran Kumar Reddy: The situation today in Andhra Pradesh is only because I have continued as the Chief Minister. If I was not the Chief Minister, this thing would have finished a long time ago. The will of the people is what I am reflecting. If the Centre does not listen, I will talk to MLAs, MLCs and MPs and central ministers, we are all together in this fight.

Rajdeep Sardesai: Are you not ruling out the option of forming your own party in the interest of a united Andhra?

Kiran Kumar Reddy: Forming a party is a different issue. I request the media not to divert our sincerity towards keeping our state united. Forming a party, me resigning, all these are subsidiary issues, small issues. You are talking about my future, my future is not important, the state's future is important. You should realise that the central ministers who are in the Cabinet also accompanied me to the President for keeping this state united today. Nearly all the central ministers were with me.

Rajdeep Sardesai: Mr Reddy, would you agree if I say the Congress is committing suicide or hara kiri if it goes ahead with the Telangana Bill?

Kiran Kumar Reddy: It is going to be a disaster for the people of Telangana, Rayalaseema and Andhra.

Rajdeep Sardesai: And the Congress party will also suffer?

Kiran Kumar Reddy: Yes. It is going to be a disaster for the people of the state. Time will tell us. What you are recording today, please store it, time will tell us if division takes place and how it is going to affect the people of all regions. That is exactly what I am trying to say, the people should benefit from any division. We are doing division for the sake of people, not for the sake of post, not for the sake of seats. We should not think of such things while you are talking of a state. If the people of all the regions are going to benefit, I will support it. But here people of all regions are going to suffer.

Rajdeep Sardesai: Do you feel the Congress leadership should reverse this decision or else they will lose the Lok Sabha and assembly elections?

Kiran Kumar Reddy: No, I do not want my party in Andhra, in Delhi to come to a situation where they have to apologise for taking such decisions. They have apologised earlier on taking some decisions. I am trying to prevent it from taking a decision which is going to be a disaster. That is exactly what I am trying to do. In previous years when certain decisions were taken which were not to the liking of the people, they have apologised to the country, they have apologised to the people. This is such a situation where the people are going to be affected in a very big way. I hope such a situation doesn't come. My carrier or chief ministership, these are all temporary things. I am trying to prevent my party or my government here from making a mistake. That's exactly what I am trying to do.
