SURAT: NRI in-laws were booked by police on Wednesday in Surat for allegedly injuring a 28-year-old woman as she suffered miscarriage repetitively. The woman was taken to a tantrik by the in-laws where she was beaten using iron rod. Police arrested the in-laws following a police complaint by the woman.

The victim, Falguni Patel, of Asta village near Kamrej, lodged the complaint with the police. In her complaint, Falguni claimed that she lived in the village with her husband Pinakin while her in-laws Daksha and Jayanti Patel were living in the US. In her complaint the victim stated that she suffered miscarriage few times after her marriage and the family blamed her for high expenditure on her medication.

Jayanti's brother Rajendra and his wife Sushila, who were in India, took Falguni to a tantrik for witch practice to ensure successful pregnancy. The tantrik blocked the victim's mouth with a piece of cloth and made branding injury on the vicitm's back using hot iron rod.

Later Rajendra and Sushila went to US and the family returned recently to India. The in-laws blamed the victim for miscarriage and demanded Rs 5 lakh in dowry. They again attacked the victim on January 15 and injured her. The victim approached police following the alleged torture. Police arrested the in-laws and started investigations in the case.
