sid_22 Posted February 24, 2014 Report Posted February 24, 2014 Telangana Rashtra Samiti has indicated to Congress that it is ready to leave the lion's share of Lok Sabha seats for the latter in the new state if Congress supports its leader K Chandrasekhar Rao's aspiration to become the first chief minister of Telangana. Sources said while the two sides have not opened formal negotiations yet, Rao, whose determined push was a major factor in the creation of Telangana, has dropped enough hints about what his bargaining stance is going to be. This may suit Congress so far as its desperate search for numbers in Lok Sabha is concerned, but can undermine its plan to emerge as the dominant force in Telangana. Party leaders from the region feel the Congress has closed the gap with TRS since the passage of the Telangana bill. By all indications, the two sides are headed for intense haggling, the outcome of which will have implications for government formation in Delhi. Rao on Sunday met Congress president Sonia Gandhi but no politics was discussed. Later in the day, KCR along with his party colleague K Keshav Rao called on Digvijaya Singh and deliberated the modalities of the tie-up between TRS and Congress. The TRS leaders said KCR and the party leaders would arrive in Hyderabad on February 26 to a grand welcome. They are scheduled to land at Begumpet airport at 2 pm on the day and take out a victory march to Gun Park where they would pay homage to Telangana martyrs. Significantly, he is also expected to meet BJP chief Rajnath Singh whose party helped the AP Reorganization Bill go through the two Houses of Parliament despite stiff opposition from the Seemandhra contingent and MPs of regional parties. Although Rao refrained from discussing seat-sharing with Congress, he focused on issues related to development of Telangana. While thanking Sonia, Rao reminded her that it was Telangana which was backward and it should not be neglected. The TRS chief gave a charter of demands to Sonia which included increase in number of IAS and IPS officers for the new state, setting up of IIM and AIIMS and granting special category status to Telangana. "No politics was discussed and it was only a thanksgiving call. I met Soniaji to express my gratitude for the passing of Telangana bill in Parliament," Rao told reporters. "Soniaji asked me to stay in touch with Digvijaya Singh," he added. The meeting is seen as crucial as Congress is fighting its toughest election and Telangana will send 17 MPs to Lok Sabha.

Addressing a meeting at Station Ghanpur here, KCR said that TRS was committed towards the Dalit cause and a separate Telangana State would have a Dalit as its first Chief Minister. He assured that the TRS would never go back on its promises. It may be mentioned that KCR had earlier promised to give the post of Chief Minister to a Dalit leader while the Deputy CM's post will be given to a Muslim candidate after the formation of Telangana State.
