Former BJP chief Bangaru Laxman, convicted in arms deal case, dies

Former Bharatiya Janata Party president Bangaru Laxman died on Saturday in Hyderabad after a prolonged illness. The 73-year-old was admitted to a private hospital in Hyderabad.

Bangaru had to step down as the president of the BJP after a sting operation by Tehelka and was convicted by a court in 2012. He was out on bail and was being treated for health problems in Hyderabad.

The Dalit leader was stung by the Tehelka in a defence deal in 2000-2001. He was seen taking Rs 1 lakh bribe in a video released by the Tehelka. He was the national president of BJP and before that a minister of state for Railways in the NDA government.

Bangaru was sentenced to four years in jail after being convicted under the Prevention of Corruption Act for accepting the bribe from a fake arms dealer in the fictitious deal in 2001. He was booked under various provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act for allegedly accepting money from fake arms dealers to recommend to the Defence Ministry to award them a contract to supply their wares for the Army.

In November 2013, reacting to sexual assault charges against Tehelka Founder-Editor Tarun Tejpal, Bangaru had said, "Both Tejpal and Asaram should be kept in the same jail and Tejpal should not be given any extra privileges. He has always been a menace. I am glad, he has been exposed finally. He even used call girls to sting others. He has no right to talk about ethics. Hope, he will spend a long time in a jail."
