 Russian Troops Still Control Ukraine Military Bases in Crimea

Russian troops and pro-Russia militias surrounded and took over military bases in Crimea this weekend, taking over naval bases, airports and a parliament building. Ukrainian forces and Russian soldiers have gotten into tense standoffs this week, with pro-Russian soldiers at one point firing off gunshots into the sky to warn Ukrainian soldiers to leave a Russian-occupied base.

Still, there have been no violent clashes so far in the region, and Russia has made no moves to go into any other part of Ukraine beyond Crimea. About 60 percent of Crimea's population are ethnic Russians.

Russia said it has sent about 6,000 troops into Crimea to protect Russian citizens, in addition to pro-Russian militias that were already in Crimea. The Ukraine government claims Russia has sent 16,000 troops into Crimea.

The Ukraine military still holds five bases plus its naval headquarters in Crimea.

 

The World is Waiting to See What Will Happen Next

All eyes will be on Paris today to see if Kerry and Lavrov can reach a deal over Ukraine that de-escalates the military situation in Crimea.

Ukraine has mobilized its troops to readiness levels but has not said it will take action against the Russian forces.

Russia has not made any move to go beyond Crimea into the rest of Ukraine, but said it hopes it will not have to use further force in the country, but leaves the option on the table.

World leaders will decide on how to respond to Russia's military moves this week, which could include economic sanctions or more serious action.

U.S. Suspends Military Relations With Russia

The United States is halting all military engagement with Russia due to the crisis in Ukraine — including military exercises, meetings and port visits, the Pentagon said Monday.

"Although the Department of Defense finds value in the military-to-military relationship with the Russian Federation we have developed over the past few years to increase transparency, build understanding, and reduce the risk of military miscalculation we have, in light of recent events in Ukraine, put on hold all military-to-military engagements between the United States and Russia. This includes exercises, bilateral meetings, port visits and planning conferences," Pentagon spokesman Rear Admiral John Kirby said in a statement.

"We call on Russia to de-escalate the crisis in Ukraine and for Russian forces in Crimea to return to their bases, as required under the agreements governing the Russia Black Sea Fleet," he added.

Kirby also noted that while "some media outlets are speculating on possible ship movements in the region," the Pentagon has not made a "change to our military posture in Europe or the Mediterranean."

Hillary Clinton compares Vladimir Putin’s actions in Ukraine to Adolf Hitler’s in Nazi Germany

 

LONG BEACH, Calif. (AP) — Former U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton likened Russian President Vladimir Putin's actions on the Crimean peninsula of Ukraine to those of Adolf Hitler in the 1930s.

Clinton made the comments Tuesday during a fundraising luncheon for local Boys and Girls Clubs, the Press-Telegram of Long Beach reported.

Putin contends ethnic Russians in Ukraine need to be protected. Clinton said that's what Hitler did when he maintained ethnic Germans outside Germany in places such as Czechoslovakia and Romania were not being treated right and needed to be protected.

"Now if this sounds familiar, it's what Hitler did back in the 30s," Clinton said, according to the newspaper. "All the Germans that were ... the ethnic Germans, the Germans by ancestry who were in places like Czechoslovakia and Romania and other places, Hitler kept saying, 'They're not being treated right. I must go and protect my people.' And that's what's gotten everybody so nervous."

The newspaper quoted Clinton as saying Putin is a man "who believes his mission is to restore Russian greatness."

"When he looks at Ukraine, he sees a place that he believes is by its very nature part of Mother Russia," she said at the private event.

Clinton continues her California tour Wednesday with an address at the University of California, Los Angeles.
