Former Director of IIT-Kanpur Prof. KL Chopra has announced that a new concept called solid-state lighting that can reduce the electricity bills by 90 per cent will be introduced in the market soon.

He explained what solid-state lighting is while addressing a national conference on 'Recent Trends of Photonics' held in Raipur University.

"In the set up, bigger bulbs giving out white light will be used, which will be larger than the size of LED bulbs. It will reduce the electricity consumption by many folds," he said.

"Not only this, research is on to find out if these lights can be charged using solar energy. If the plan is successful, the energy consumption will come down by 90% and people will have to pay extremely cheap electricity bills," he added

Apart from developing solar bulbs, IIT-Kanpur is also researching on a device that will help trace breast cancer in it's early stage. This device will work by sensing the body heat, suggests a report in Dainik Bhaskar.

The event was attended by faculty of IIT-Delhi and IIT-Mumbai. CEO of CREDA (Chhattisgarh Renewable Energy Development Agency) KK Chandrakar was also present at the seminar.
