Guns fall silent after 7-day battle in Rajouri ends

SRINAGAR: The nearly seven-day-long battle between Lashkar-e-Taiba militants and security forces in Rajouri district ended on Friday, with the killing of four militants and a soldier.

In all, 16 militants and six personnel died. Four militants and a trooper were killed in the woods of Bagla in Triyath Dharmshala on Friday.

The encounter began on March 27 and lasted till Friday evening after personnel of 53 Rashtriya Rifles, the police and 152 CRPF spotted a group of militants.

While a soldier and a militant were killed on March 30 after four days of sporadic fighting, six militants and two more soldiers were killed on Thursday, police sources said.

“Four more militants and a soldier were killed today [on Friday],” Lt. Col Biplab Nath, PRO Defence, said. The soldier killed on Friday was Salayesh of 53 Rashtriya Rifles.

The troops recovered a large quantity of arms and ammunition from the site of the battle.
