timmy Posted March 23, 2014 Report Posted March 23, 2014 I-news is KKR he also has share in it. Launching a newspaper or television channel is no easy task, as it is highly cost intensive and the gestation period for achieving break-even is too long. Yet, political leaders in Andhra Pradesh have chosen to launch their own media houses, as they feel there is no better way to get publicity for themselves in the run-up to the 2014 general elections. The latest entrants into the media business are chief minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy and Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) president Botsa Satyanarayana. Of course this has not been direct but through their family enterprises or friends. For the last few weeks, two existing television channels - I-News" and A-TV - have been extensively airing programmes highlighting the achievements of the chief minister and telecasting all his programmes live. Inquiries revealed that Kiran's friends and relatives have acquired a major share in these channels. So is the case with the PCC president, who has taken over an already popular news channel - Zee 24 Ghantalu. This channel was originally a part of the Zee Television network, but it was almost being wound up a couple of months ago due to recurring losses when Botsa came forward to take over the channel in the name of his family enterprise. The channel is now giving wide publicity to Botsa and provided live telecast of the recent PCC extended executive committee meeting. Yet another news channel - 10TV - is coming up in the state shortly. Though the channel is supposed to have the backing of CPI (M), its management has claimed that the promoters are a group of progressive ideologues led by independent MLC and journalism professor K. Nageshwar. Interestingly, this channel has a strange and unique ownership model as the investment was raised through donations from the general public. The CPI(M) already has its own Telugu daily called Praja Sakthi which gives wide publicity to the party's ideology and agitations. The CPI, too, is making preparations to launch its own television channel - TV99 - sometime in the second half of the next year. It also has its own Telugu daily - Visalandhra, which has been in existence for over five decades. Almost all the other political parties in the state have their own channels and dailies. While popular channel Sakshi TV and the Telugu daily of the same name are owned by YSR Congress president and jailed Kadapa MP Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy, another not-so-popular channel Studio N has close links with Telugu Desam Party president N Chandrababu Naidu. Two prominent Telugu dailies and their associated channels - Eenadu and Andhra Jyothy, are also strongly supporting the TDP. Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS), which has been spearheading the statehood movement, has its own channel called T-News. The BJP is also set to launch its own Telugu news channel Orange TV soon. In all, there are 16 television channels in the state and the number is likely to go up in the coming month.
