After days of hectic parleys, leaders from both the BJP and TDP confirmed that talks were not moving anywhere, with both parties sticking to their guns over seat sharing. While some of the leaders said that a grand alliance comprising BJP, TDP along with Lok Satta and Pawan Kalyan's Jana Sena can still be a reality, many leaders from both sides are already into a war of words which are quickly straining ties. "We are confident enough to win the elections by going it alone. With a Modi wave sweeping across the nation, we are sure of winning at least four Lok Sabha seats each in Telangana and Seemandhra. In such a case, why should we agree to terms being dictated by a party like TDP," said P Muralidhar Rao, BJP national general secretary. Sources said the BJP was cozying up to the YSR Congress after talks with the TDP seemed to have hit a wall. Muralidhar did not rule out this possibility. "It is all about the post-poll scenario. In the match-making exercise, anyone can be a match," he added. For the record, YSR Congress has said no party, including the BJP was untouchable, and it was not wary of supporting the NDA, if it is in the interest of the development of the state. "People know about TDP's double standards and greed for power. So, we are not surprised over the failed talks between the BJP and TDP. As far as the post-poll alliance is concerned, our party president has said that no party is untouchable and we stand by it," said Ambati Ram Babu, YSR Congress spokesperson. Filmstar Pawan Kalyan has also thrown his hat into the ongoing battle. He wrote to BJP leaders saying that his party was in support of Narendra Modi's leadership, but not for alliance with a regional party like TDP. Pawan Kalyan met Modi last week and is understood to have been asked by the BJP's prime ministerial candidate to take charge of the poll campaign in Seemandhra. The film star is organizing a massive poll rally in Visakhapatnam on March 27, in which over five lakh people are expected take part. Meanwhile, TDP leaders slammed the BJP and questioned whether it can win seats on its own in the state. "The BJP leaders are being unrealistic and asking for too much. If they are really interested in joining hands with us, they must do it in right earnest, instead of putting forth impractical demands. However, it is up to the party leadership to take the call," said party leader Revanth Reddy. Political commentators said the BJP-TDP grand alliance was falling apart largely over seat-sharing in Telangana. A few key Lok Sabha seats, including Malkajgiri in Telangana and Visakhapatnam and Vijayawada in Seemandhra are the bone of contention. Pointing out that the TDP is being dubbed as anti-Telangana, the T-BJP leaders are arguing that any alliance with the party in the region would become a liability. The Telangana BJP led by G Kishan Reddy is asking for at least 10 out of 17 Lok Sabha seats and 60 of the total 119 Assembly segments. On the other hand, the Seemandhra BJP led by K Haribabu has expressed its willingness to be a junior partner in the region and will settle for four out of 25 Lok Sabha seats and 20 out of 175 Assembly seats. But a defiant TDP has categorically said it would not be a junior partner to BJP in both the regions. "There are certain issues to be addressed. I think it would be decided on Monday either this way or that," said Sujana Chowdary, a TDP Rajya Sabha member who is representing the TDP in the alliance talks. While hopes on the alliance are dimming by the day, the Lok Satta leaders are still hopeful. "The grand alliance we are trying to forge is in the interest of the development of the state. While the Lok Satta is still optimistic that the alliance will happen, I am of the view that it must happen," said Tara Krishnaswamy, chairperson of the party's national alliance committee. Party president Jayaprakash Narayan is aspiring to contest from Malkajgiri Lok Sabha constituency, which again has upset TDP leaders. "How can a person like Jayaprakash Narayan, who is from the Seemandhra background, be our candidate if the alliance happens? He is trying to forge the alliance to achieve his own political ends, and this would be one of the reasons for the failure of the talks," said Revanth Reddy, who is himself aspiring to contest from Malkajgiri on a TDP ticket
