guys, can anyone working on data warehouse, answer the following question..

 

There is no documentation nor models nor available expertise about how medical order data is stored in the database.How might you figure it out under these circumstances?

BA/users can explain you better..... :)

 

try to arrange few meetings with business users/BA

 

I faced similar situation in my current project,few KT sessions by my lead was very helpful..... :)

Find out business process man it's done ...u will automatically understand how data is stored...
U will no the relationship between entities so get a grip on business process

Analyze ur source man (how the Business works )...for eg ..If some one orders a Medicine ..what data he is entering and in which table that data ends up and whats the relationship between tables . Once you Establish that relation ..you will have a start point for ur dimensional modeling .. A sample star schema on ur model might look something like this

You need to probably understand the logical model and physical model to know the relationship btw different tables

1.look at the stored procedures that are using this database or look at the reports that are generated from this database.

 

2. Reverse engineer the database using data modeling tools like Erwin or er studio and generate the model.

 

3.look at the application's that are using this database and find out the sourescript to the applications

 

4. You can write a sql script to pull columns with names that might be having this info, for eg columns like "records", 'Patients", Agents, providers,
