On March 21 Kalpana Giri, Gen Secy of Latur Youth Congress, left home to attend celebrations for the birthday of Latur MLA Amit Deshmukh, the son of the late Maharashtra chief minister Vilasrao Deshmukh.

Two days later her body was fished out of a pond on the highway to Tuljapur, 60 km from Latur. Her body was bloated, face had acid burns, One of her eyes had popped out, and the tongue had been cut out.

some felt she had rose 'very quickly' through the ranks but ironically the same party ended her life. Allegedly the Latur Youth Congress president Chavan (son of local Congress strongman Vikramsingh Chavan) raped and killed Kalpana as he wanted to end his illicit relationship with her.
However the real motives are yet unknown.
