NEW DELHI: Was AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal's decision to quit as the Delhi chief minister in just 49 days a political masterstroke or a terrible miscalculation?

As AAP campaigns on as many as 407 seats in a bid to make its mark in the national elections, it is facing questions repeatedly about why the party chose to abandon office in haste and whether this displayed an inability to govern. Aware that providing a satisfactory answer might be central to AAP's fortunes, Kejirwal has sought to target BJP and Congress over their ambivalence on the timing of Delhi's assembly election.

Kejirwal has argued that AAP is confident of returning to office with a sizeable majority. Denying the "deserter" charge, he has said decisions like free water, cuts in power tariffs and reduced corruption are evidence of AAP's pro-people initiatives.

But the pitch for the Lok Sabha elections is looking a bit different. Where there was an upsurge of support in the Delhi elections, a section of AAP's middle-class voters has shifted allegiance to BJP, disappointed by AAP's record in office. Some are willing to give the party a chance, particularly voters from the socially and economically disadvantaged sections. But even in these sections, there is a debate whether a vote for AAP "went waste". Voters are asking if there is a guarantee that AAP will not evade responsibility again.

"Why did you leave," is probably the most asked question to AAP candidates. The party has even printed pamphlets that explain Kejriwal's reasons for resigning. But AAP sources say constant criticism also set them thinking if exiting was the right thing to have done. "For us, it was a principled stand. If our most important bill was not allowed to be tabled on the floor of the House, how could we have continued," said a source.

AAP leaders, however, remain positive. "The massive response at our meetings and the fact that people are engaging with us means that the decision was not all wrong," said party sources.
