Anantapur: YSRCP leader Sharmila made some rather strong comments against Balakrishna during her tour of Hindupur. She questioned how a mad man can contest in polls. She reminded that Balakrishna had acquired a certificate in the past stating that his mental health was unstable when he was summoned regarding a case about shootings that took place at his home. She launched a full-blown tirade against both Balakrishna and Chandra Babu Naidu. She warned the people that if they vote for a mad man, then he will make them mad. She said that Balakrishna who could not be a good son might be a good actor but he did not have the skills to be a good politician. Sharmila pointed out that being a good politician did not mean twirling one’s moustache or thigh-thumping. She said that a politician should be aware of people’s problems and should make efforts to solve them. Shifting her focus to Chandra Babu Naidu, she said Naidu spent most of his time trying to have back door dealings with the Congress instead of dealing with people’s problems. She asked the people to recall that when a no-confidence motion was moved against the Congress for failing people, Naidu had supported the Congress by issuing a whip to help them remain in power. She said Balakrishna was now working with a man who had back-stabbed the founder of TDP late NTR and got people to throw shoes on him. A man like Balakrishna who was a bad son did not have the moral right to question Jagan said Sharmila. There was no parity between Jagan and Balakrishna she said as Jagan had gone to jail for no fault of his. She reminded the gathering that Jagan had fought for the rights of farmers, weavers and students and that he gave up power and position to take up the ‘odarpu’ yatra after their father’s death. She reiterated that YSR’s name was synonymous with trust and added that her father lived on in the hearts of people. As a part of the election road show, Sharmila was in Hindupur where she called upon people to vote for YSRCP to bring back the golden era under YSR. She listed out various pro-people schemes introduced by her father like the ‘pavala vaddi runalu’, providing education to poor students to help them become doctors and engineers, Arogyasri, etc. Lastly, she said that during YSR’s time, inflation was under control and people did not have to pay high prices for basic necessities.

The shooting star

Actor Balakrishna alleged gunfire attack exposes bizarre workings of Telugu film industry
Amarnath K. Menon  June 21, 2004 | UPDATED 18:18 IST

When he was alive, Telugu superstar N.T. Rama Rao was labelled "Drama" Rao by his opponents. Now, a decade after the former Andhra Pradesh chief minister's death, the drama involving his immediate family continues, but is starting to resemble a Shakespearean tragedy.

His son, leading film star Balakrishna, faces charges of attempted murder after he allegedly fired six shots at two visitors at his Jubilee Hills bungalow in Hyderabad on June 3.

A day later, Balakrishna's elder brother Saikrishna, a film producer and distributor, died after being in a coma for over two years. Adding pathos to the drama, NTR's widow, Lakshmi Parvati, carried his ashes to Hardwar to immerse them in the Ganga after preserving them for nine years having vowed that she would only carry out the last rite once NTR's son-in-law and former chief minister N. Chandrababu Naidu was voted out of power.

The Balakrishna affair, however, is beginning to read like a B-grade movie script. Initial reports suggested a drunken brawl involving Balakrishna and his two guests, producer Bellamkonda Suresh and astrologer and confidant Satyanarayana Choudhary, who were discussing some outstanding financial issues relating to a film and preparations for the star's birthday on June 10. The argument turned nasty and the actor whipped out a revolver and opened fire, injuring both seriously.

HIGH DRAMA IN HYDERABAD: Balakrishna (left) is said to have shot at Bellamkonda Suresh (above) and Satyanarayana Choudhary and got himself admitted in a hospital to evade arrest
Even if a truce is declared, Balakrishna faces charges of misuse of weapon and att empts to conceal evidence.

After Suresh and Choudhary were rushed to the nearby Apollo Hospital, the actor called an ambulance from Care Hospital, over 5 km away, to take him for emergency treatment. Only then did the police get to know about the shoot-out from the media.

By then, the blood-spattered area had been cleaned and the actor's wife Vasundhara as well as others at home had made a hurried exit after locking up the house which his father had built. But the policeman aged to get the house opened and discovered four bullets embedded in the wall and woodwork, clearly ruling out the possibility of self-defence. They also found a bill for 60 bullets bought earlier in the day.

Meanwhile, Balakrishna played the role of his life, feigning serious illness and managed to hold out for about 50 hours even as the police booked him for attempt to murder, flouting the Arms Act and trying to tamper with evidence. Both he and his wife have licensed 32 revolvers but the one that was used was in his wife's name. Not surprisingly, she got herself admitted in Care complaining of depression and exhaustion, apparently to evade possible arrest.

The drama rolled on even after Balakrishna was produced before a magistrate. He pleaded for continued medical attention but this time the judge directed that Balakrishna be admitted to the state run Nizam Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS). The judge wanted NIMS to certify whether the actor should continue in hospital or be sent to jail. Following a series of tests the hospital announced that the actor was physically fit but needed psychiatric care. It also said that he was not cooperative during the examination.

Evidently, Balakrishna was buying time to avoid the ignominy of going to jail. His lawyers contended that the whole incident was blown out of proportion by the media. The fact that no fingerprints were found on both revolvers (they had obviously been wiped clean) makes it difficult for the police to find out who shot whom. This is crucial because Suresh who earlier said that Balakrishna had fired at him retracted saying he was not aware who shot at him. Even if the victims turn hostile during the trial, Balakrishna still faces charges of misuse of weapon and attempt to conceal evidence.

The actor's latest release Lakshmi Narasimha is said to be the root of all trouble. Suresh and other financial backers had lost money on the film. Balakrishna reportedly blamed Suresh for not ensuring adequate publicity for the movie. One fan had died in the initial stampede for tickets and three others had committed suicide after betting heavily that Lakshmi Narasimha would break all box-office records.

Balakrishna had announced a donation of Rs.5 lakh each to the bereaved families on his birthday. But on that eventful evening, he asked Suresh to pay up. Another sticky issue was Choudhary's astrological advice that was not helping the actor. A third issue was the huge sum to be repaid by Suresh to a financier who had approached Balakrishna to intervene on his behalf.

Whatever the reason the shoot-and-scoot episode has exposed the bizarre way in which the Telugu film industry operates. Producers and actors alike are involved in a game of high stakes that puts a premium on the actor rather than the film. Producers and financiers bank heavily on the top three actors, Chiranjeevi, NTR Junior and Balakrishna.

Money changes hands even before the cameras roll. Film rights are sold well in advance and there is a race to see which film sets records. Most often the pre-release hype doesn't match the box-office performance. Yet actors charge exorbitant rates and fuel this race by promoting their fan associations. In such a system both producers and financiers are given short shrift.

In Balakrishna's case, the failings of the system took their toll. With the evidence piling up and the pressure from supporters of Telugu filmdom's first family, there could be plenty of twists and turns in the plot before the curtain comes down.

newsbag_balakrishna_main_20040621.jpgIt's a plot to outdo the most dramatic Tollywood script: 44-year-old matinee idol Nandamuri Balakrishna whipped out a pistol and shot two of his dinner guests last week. A leading Telugu filmstar, he's the son and self-proclaimed inheritor of N.T. Rama Rao's film legacy. And his connections don't end there. One of Balakrishna's sisters is married to ex-CM Chandrababu Naidu while another sister, Purnadeshwari, was recently elected as Congress MP. Her husband is a Congress MLA.

Despite all this, Balakrishna is looking down the barrel. His shooting spree critically injured film producer B. Suresh and astrologer friend Satyanarayana Chaudhary. According to the police, all three were in "an inebriated state" when the incident occurred. Balakrishna has reportedly admitted to the shooting but claims he fired in self-defence after he was attacked with a paper knife. However, in a dramatic twist to the tale, both the injured men have allegedly changed their initial statements to the police. Suresh, who first claimed he had been shot by the actor, now says he cannot remember who shot him. Chaudhary claims he was shot accidentally.

However, police say they have enough evidence for a watertight case against the actor. This despite local film stalwarts coming on the scene to "rescue" Balakrishna. Investigations are on to find out if this was a premeditated move by the actor, given the fact that he had bought several rounds of bullets on the morning of the shooting. They have also questioned the actor's wife and the servants present in the house. Industry sources say Balakrishna was peeved with Suresh who produced his last film Laxmi Narasimha. The film was a moderate hit but the actor had wanted the producer to ensure the film ran for at least 100 days in 287 theatres across the state. He also wanted compensation paid to the families of four fans who committed suicide after losing large sums betting on the film's success.

As is the case with VIPs, Balakrishna, who has been remanded to two weeks judicial custody by the courts, is currently in a hospital purportedly suffering from depression.
