Hyderabad: In a major embarrassment to Telugu Desam President N Chandrababu Naidu, election officials have declared his vote invalid.

Chief Electoral Officer Bhanwar Lal said Naidu’s votes both in Lok Sabh and Assembly elections will be treated as invalid as he had violated the rules by declaring who he had voted.

“Under the election rules you cannot declare which party or candidate you have voted,” he said.

After casting his vote in a polling booth in the Jubilee Hills area near his residence, Naidu told the media he had voted for the BJP.

“For the first time I could not vote for my party’s symbol [the] Cycle. This is painful. I had to cast both the votes for the BJP candidates as part of the alliance with the party,” he said.

TDP had left the Secunderabad Lok Sabha constituency and Jubilee Hills assembly constituency for its partner the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Angered over the election boss’s decision to invalidate Naidu’s vote, the Telugu Desam Party has lodged a complaint with the Election Commission against Bhanwar Lal.
