dalapathi Posted May 5, 2014 Report Posted May 5, 2014 New Delhi /Hyderabad: The Supreme Court on Monday refused to stay bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh and thus cleared all decks for the formation of Telangana, the 29th state of the country, on the appointed day on June 2. Dealing with as many as 24 petitions filed by Seemandhra leaders including former Chief Minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy opposing the division of the state on the grounds that due democratic and Constitutional processes were not followed in Parliament for the passage of the A.P. Reorganization Bill 2014, the Supreme Court refused to grant any stay in the matter. The Supreme Court also gave six weeks time for the central government to file its counter-affidavit in the matter and posted further hearing of the case to August 20. At one stage the court also was so peeved with the arguments of one of the petitioners, Undavalli Arun Kumar, a sitting Congress MP, that quipped that the “court cannot be treated and converted into a fish market”. Thus with the ruling of the apex court, Andhra Pradesh would be divided as two states – Telangana and Seemandhra – on the scheduled appointed day of June 2 without any hitch or hurdles. Former Chief Minister Kiran Kumar Reddy’s political outfit Jai Samaikyandhra party is also in the poll fray in Seemandhra in a bid to exploit the sentiments of the people of the region who were against division of the state. However, with the court ruling it has to be seen how much the new party would succeed in its efforts to win the poll battle. Though the Supreme Court ruling might have come as a relief to the Congress High Command, there are setbacks awaiting for the party nominees in Seemandhra in the electoral battle. In fact Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy and his YSR Congress Party would not hesitate to exploit the situation to stir the sentiments and emotions of the electorate by pointing an accusing finger at the Congress, TDP and BJP for drawing the blueprint for dividing the Telugu people.
