I think caste is the biggest reason why Hindu culture survived.

or we would all be typing "allamdullillah" for every para we post here.

hmm so you really think caste is the only reason why the so called influential positions were thriving. lemme try to put it in the oder words - influential/capable leaders minus their castes = what/nothin?? is this what u r tryin to say?

gud to know dat there does exists few..ok if so why not in current day politics, what do you think might be the reasons that such leaders did existed in the past and not now??

Posted

so you meant to say that there exists none as per the scenario in the question, the reason would be not being able to form their own groups?? (if so what would be the difference between oder leaders and this emerging leader who will be using a caste tag again?)

the difference is emerging leader brings with him a new set of chamchas from his caste, changes the social order for a while, and enriches his caste people.

Can you think of a better equalizing system?

the only problem with this is, numerically small lower castes have no chance, unless they form a powerful coalition. or merge with a numerically higher lower caste.

hmm, I see what you are saying, but then don't you think, there would be a bias?? to me it sounds like caste system plays the key role either ways, my question - is there a possibility of a person becoming an influential political leader without using caste tags?

what do you mean by nothing?

do you think its easy to become a caste leader? of any caste?

Isn't all politics just managing expectations of different people? Apart from exemplary social skills, I'm not sure what 'capability' you expect from a political leader?

why is using a caste tag a bad thing?

Its not politician's job to reform society.

@ Trollbait, I believe you have better knowledge to assess the political system in tamilnadu (just for the time being to compare TG/AP with oder states), is it the same in TN as well?? can you please elaborate?

actually I have no knowledge of politics. I just know that people respond to incentives, and politicians job to manage those incentives.

If a politician is perceived to incentivize his own caste men too much, why don't other castes join together to throw that idiot out?

may be because they bought into the silly concept of 'talking about caste a bad thing'. It only serves upper castes when lower castes don't form groups to challenge them.

because once you use a caste tag, for the most part oder ppl who do not belong to this caste will not support, say for instance there is a local leader in my area who belongs to the same caste as I do, no matter he is good/bad I will try to support him (here, I means an average voter with an average education), resulting in an useless person to be the leader, which might caste serious consequences at a later point of time..

if a useless person rises to the top of your caste, it means your caste is useless. But don't be in a hurry..

its an iterative process. Once power is achieved through this 'useless' person, things will start looking up for your caste, and a better leader will come along.

only if a smarter guy challenges him, ofcourse.

If smart people in your caste, settle down in US, and start claiming that caste is a bad thing, your caste will retain the same useless leader.

politics is a group game.

If you want to be enlightened and stay away from this small mindedness.. you should not indulge in politics at all.

Also I don't think its wise to promote someone who shows no affiliation to any group (Modi).

I prefer a low caste Mayawati to be PM.

okay.. Modern republic lo caste entaa ani anukundaam.

unless by some magic,

all castes become socially equal, and are equally represented in the lok sabha, and no one bothers about caste anymore,

it makes great sense to use caste to claim power. Mulluni mullu thone theeyaali.

But I know, in real politics, powerful castes are often unchallenged. It should change.
