Spartan Posted May 14, 2014 Report Posted May 14, 2014 HOUSTON (KRON) — New data from NASA shows that within the last week more than half of the United States was experiencing drought conditions with some of the worst conditions centered in Northern California. The U.S. National Drought Monitor’s map is based on data from climate, soil, and water conditions from more than 350 federal, state, and local observers around the country. The map shows the worst drought is centered in Central Nevada, the Texas panhandle and Permian Basin areas as well as California from the Bay Area across the northern Central Valley to the Sierra Nevada. “The entire state of California is in some level of drought, much of it extreme to exceptional,” researchers say in a written statement. “Snowpack is 50 percent of normal in many locations in the West, and experts note that a lot of snow has completely melted before it normally would.” Researchers say the drought conditions are having a devastating impact on California’s vegetable and citrus crops. At the same time nationally, 54% of wheat farmers are dealing with the drought along with 48% of cattle rachers and 30% of the corn grown in the U.S.
