Suggest A Better Place To Live Near Newyork City

One of our family friend got a job in Melville -NY very close to the long island -NY. They are looking for one bedroom and good place to stay 30 miles radius with in the Melville along with a family. 

Please let us know which place is better and least expensive to stay and commute to Melville,Ny. They don't know anybody and have no idea where to stay in this area . Melville looks very expensive place to stay one bedroom costs more than 2000$. 

Meeku thelisina better place ,better apartment , better area to stay around Queens ,jamaica or long island or any other place  unte cheppandi. 

Please help to suggest which is better.

Its better to find a place in Nj and travel back and forth everyday....or u can try on metronorth route......white plains mount vernon, newrochelle...
