posaanisam Posted May 22, 2014 Report Posted May 22, 2014 ED prepares to attach more Jagan assets NEW DELHI: YSR Congress chief Jaganmohan Reddy was among the first non-NDA leaders to declare support to Narendra Modi. Ironically, in a likely first big anti-corruption initiative after Modi takes office, Enforcement Directorate could attach several more properties of Jagan and his associates, valued at hundreds of crores, in the money laundering cases filed against them. According to sources, the Enforcement Directorate could be weeks away from attaching the properties. The ED had in the first week of March attached assets worth Rs 863 crore belonging to Jagan and his associates under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). The ED in 2012 registered cases based on the FIRs filed by CBI into the alleged corruption charges against Jagan and others. The ED had attached properties in March based on its investigation originating from six CBI chargesheets. The properties attached were deemed proceeds of crime. According to sources, the ED is now in the final stages of investigation based on seven other CBI chargesheets. Several assets have been identified based on the new investigation, sources said. In the earlier instance, most attachments were linked to the Vadarevu and Nizampatnam Industrial Corridor (VANPIC) project that was for developing sea ports and a greenfield airport in coastal areas of Andhra Pradesh, and industrial corridors in Prakasam and Guntur districts. The ED probe had said that various concessions were extended to VANPIC project including giving away government land to companies floated by the accused, exemptions of stamp duty and registration charges etc. Jagan was arrested by CBI in May 2012 and remained in jail until September 2013. The CBI investigation showed that Jagan's assets dramatically grew from less than Rs 10 lakh to hundreds of crores when his late father Y S Rajasekhara Reddy was the chief minister of Andhra Pradesh. The CBI investigations have featured several industrial houses, many politicians and civil servants, who were all party to the conspiracy. Among the many tactics, CBI accused Jagan of chiefly operating suitcase companies, which received investments in crores at exaggerated valuation from private firms that had benefitted from YSR government.
