100 Million Tonnes Of Oil Discovered In Kg Basin

The Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) has discovered 100 million tonnes of oil in the offshore Krishna-Godavari block called KG-DWN-98/2 off the coast of Andhra Pradesh, according to Narendra K. Verma, its Director (Exploration).

“KG-DWN-98/2 was primarily a gas field. But we have discovered 100 million tonnes of oil there. It has changed our entire development strategy,” he said. The ONGC will start producing oil from the field from 2017-18.

Mr. Verma told reporters at Chinnapuliyur village, near Gummidipoondi, about 55 km from Chennai, that it was the ONGC which discovered the Ravva hydrocarbon-bearing field, off the Andhra coast and handed it over to the private companies. “It was discovered and developed by us,” he said.

A well drilled by the ONGC in the KG offshore basin had a bathymetry of 3,070 metres, which was the deepest bathymetry for an offshore well in the world.

Path of upgrade

The ONGC was on the “path of upgrade” now, he said. Hardware including rigs, floaters were being upgraded. New-generation rigs, with joysticks, had come into play in North America, where hundreds of wells were being drilled. These rigs could drill a 4,000-metre-deep well in three weeks. They could be assembled or dismantled in a day.

“Everything is fully automatic,” said Mr. Verma, who has been selected to head ONGC Videsh Ltd. (OVL) as its Managing Director.

B.S. Josyulu, Executive Director and Basin Manager, Cauvery, ONGC, said the corporation had to stop drilling two wells near Madanam in Sirkali, Tamil Nadu, after local villagers protested against the drilling. He was sure the problem would be sorted out.
