Dharavath Sirisha scores 986 out of 1,000 marks

Born in a remote tribal tanda in Nalgonda district, where no girl ever dreamt of even pursuing college education till a few years ago, this tribal girl, who scored 986/1,000 marks in the recently announced Intermediate results, aims to become a civil servant and serve society.

Dharavath Sirisha who scored the 9th best marks in the State in MPC stream, hails from Jatoth Tanda under Kesaram gram panchayat limits near Suryapet town. Her father Narasimha, 38, who studied up to 7th class, owns just two acres of land. Mr.Narasimha and his wife, Chinnabai, work as labourers besides cultivating their two acres of land, but all this never seemed to be a hurdle in Sirisha’a way to perform well in academics.

Offered free education

As she used to perform well in the government school, a private school located in Suryapet offered her free education. She scored 9.8 grade point average in Class X living up to the expectations of the school’s management. Later, a private junior college offered her free education in Intermediate with residential facility believing that her performance would bring them name and fame which she again did by scoring 98.6 per cent marks.

Sirisha told The Hindu that in past few years some boys hailing from her village had completed their engineering and settled down as employees either in the corporate sector or with government organisations. As a tribal girl, the 17-year-old said she saw her parents and neighbours facing numerous problems. "My village lacks safe drinking water supply even after 67 years after Independence besides many basic amenities,” she said. Many students lacks guidance to pursue a good career because of lack of support from their unlettered and poor parents despite having good talent.

She said her uncle, Nageshwar Rao, had scored 536/600 in his Xth class and 952/1000 in Intermediate but had settled down as a constable after dropping out of his engineering education though he scored very good EAMCET rank, due to lack of proper guidance and support from his parents. “Civil servants have a key role in the development of society which is why she was motivated to pursue it as career,” Sirisha pointed out. Expecting a good EAMCET rank, she said that she would start preparation for civil services seriously from her third year of engineering.
