Plaque and cholesterol buildup in your arteries can cause a multitude of health problems; cardiovascular disease, heart attacks, peripheral artery disease and strokes are some of the most common. There are many ways to target excess plaque and cholesterol through food sources, dietary supplements and medications. Consult your doctor before you begin a treatment program.

Whole Grains

Whole grain foods like millet, quinoa, oatmeal, wheat germ contain plenty of fiber, which cleans out your arteries. These foods contain a soluble fiber that binds cholesterol to the intestines so that your body does not absorb it. Artery plaque and cholesterol are eliminated from your system as waste products.

Fish

Fish contain a significant amount of omega-3 fatty acids, which are advantageous to your body in many ways. An omega-3 mostly reduces your risk of artery plaque, because it raises your good cholesterol, or your HDL cholesterol. This also prevents an onset of cardiovascular diseases. Trout, herring, tuna, mackerel and salmon are some of richest sources of omega-3 fats.

Fruits and Vegetables

Fruits and vegetables contain plenty of antioxidants, few calories and do not contain trans or saturated fats. The latter types of fats can contribute to heart attack, stroke and heart disease due to arterial plaque buildup. Fruits and veggies combat these illnesses. They also contain fiber which lowers bad, or LDL, cholesterol that contributes to plaque buildup.

Olive Oil

Olive oil is a cooking oil that contains monounsaturated fats that help prevent cholesterol and plaque buildup. It is best to use in lieu of margarine or butter, which have plenty of artery clogging trans and saturated fats.

Mixed Nuts

Nuts contain monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats. Both help reduce artery plaque and high cholesterol. They also help lower your LDL cholesterol. Try eating a handful of almonds, peanuts, macadamia nuts and Brazil nuts daily. You can also eat walnuts which contain the same good fats as well as the same omega-3 fats found in fish.
