My personel choice ford taurus .. Relatively 5k $ cheaper and taurus is on american roads for 30 years now and can run longer tooo... My friend car had (mid size sedan) 175k miles before it met with accident.

Impala wont be a bad choice as well bit again above 30k

Only car that come beliw 30 k are charger and taurus

Go with taurus

If you are friend is willing to spend 30 plus for semi luxury full size sedan , he can go for cadenza too  ;)

if you have 32 k you can buy a regular  sedan with all features 

 

 

never buy a used bmw or mercedez 

 

for your price range - maxima , avalon and ford tarus is what i suggest

 

 

if you want to go for luxury

 

acura ilx hybrid - around 38mpg on highway, 28k base price
