Private medical colleges in Andhra Pradesh are pushing for a uniform fee structure starting from the academic year 2014-15. The college management seeks to fix the annual fee anywhere between Rs 8 lakh to Rs 9 lakh per student.

The fee regulatory committee, after a period of four years, has sat down to revise the MBBS fee structure.

At present, according to the fee structure followed, non-minority medical colleges offer 40 per cent of their seats (Category A) for Rs 60,000 and 10 per cent for Rs 2.4 lakh. While the remaining seats are sold as management quota seats, for which anything between Rs 50 lakh to Rs 1 crore is demanded.

The minority institutions on the other hand offer 60 per cent of their seats at Rs 60,000 on merit basis and the rest 40 per cent are marked as management quota seats. There are around 3,300 MBBS seats under private medical colleges at the moment.

"Engineering Agricultural and Medical Common Entrance Test (Eamcet) notification has come and the government should take a call before the election notification. Else, we will fix a uniform fee structure," said a representative of a college management.

Also, recently the Union cabinet approved the continuation of a centrally-sponsored scheme for strengthening and upgradation of state government medical colleges, in turn generating almost 4,000 additional postgraduate medical seats.
