Pawan Kalyan addressed the media yesterday, after the BJP and TDP combine came to power in Seemandhra area. The delight on his face was evident and he was in a very good mood. The normally reticent superstar was even fending off questions from journalists with great humour and sportiveness.

Pawan Kalyan is happy.

Pawan Kalyan’s happiness does not seem to stem from the victory of the NDA alone. There was a lot more for Pawan at stake and fortunately, everything worked out perfectly. They say that fortune favours the brave and Pawan’s open support to Modi and Chandrababu was a very brave step indeed. This fact was widely acknowledged by many, including Modi and Chandrababu Naidu. The leaders publicly tweeted their appreciation and expressed their thanks to Pawan Kalyan.

“I want to express my gratitude to Pawan Kalyan Garu for his enthusiasm & support through the campaign across Andhra Pradesh”, tweeted Modi. Chandrababu Naidu on the other hand had this to say, “A silent wave in AP. For this victory, I owe thanks to the lakhs of TDP cadre, Narendra Modi & Pawan. Good governance & development won!”

So what exactly was at stake for Pawan and what was he risking?

The most obvious risk Pawan Kalyan took was the decision to go against the Congress Party being represented by his brother, Chiranjeevi. This decision openly divided the Mega Family and its huge fan base into two camps. Pawan Kalyan respects and adores his brother Chiranjeevi very deeply and it must not have been an easy decision to make. What made the risk bigger was the decision to come out in support of the Telugu Desam Party, a political outfit which is not generally perceived as ‘favourable’ by Mega Family fans.

Fortunately for Pawan, a big chunk of the Mega Family fan base rallied behind him. Ever since Chiranjeevi merged the erstwhile Praja Rajyam Party with the Congress, most Mega Family fans have been looking up to Pawan Kalyan as their source of pride. Back to back blockbusters like ‘Gabbar Singh’ and ‘Atharintiki Daaredhi’ gave them a lot to cheer about. Pawan’s impeccable credentials as a man of his word salvaged their wounded pride.

Another big risk that Pawan Kalyan took was the decision to plunge into active politics. For his fans and for the people of Andhra Pradesh, the debacle of the Praja Rajyam Party was still very fresh. At his peak, Chiranjeevi enjoyed tremendous popularity and public support in the state of Andhra Pradesh. When he announced his PRP, many tipped him to become the Chief Minister, but we all know how that story ended. Fans were afraid that Pawan Kalyan’s popularity would take a beating if something similar happened. More than anything else, they were afraid that his personal life would be dragged out into the open.

Pawan Kalyan understood those risks and he planned his moves very smartly. In the very first public meeting of the ‘Jana Sena Party’, he warned his political opponents to stay away from his personal life. He also made it very clear that his Jana Sena Party would not contest the Elections in 2014. That, was a masterstroke. While some criticised Pawan for shying away from an electoral fight, most people realised that he was not here for Power. That gave him a huge credibility boost. The spectre of a political debacle vanished and fans were galvanised into action.

And the biggest risk of all? It was the decision to publicly and fearlessly attack the likes of Sonia Gandhi, KCR, Y.S Jagan and Owaisi. Any movie star who is at the peak of his popularity normally shies away from taking a tough political stance. Forget about a film actor. No political leader attacked KCR and his TRS like Pawan did. Pawan Kalyan’s open and fearless comments on issues like the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh brought him closer to the masses. He gave vent to the pent up anger of the people in both Seemandhra and Telangana regions.

So when he asked his fans and supporters to vote for the BJP and TDP, they responded. Some may argue that the Telugu Desam and Narendra Modi were already going strong in Seemandhra before Pawan Kalyan joined. True. But Pawan’s entry made the difference between a victory and outright domination. In West Godavari, the Telugu Desam party delivered a knockout punch to YS Jagan by winning all 15 seats. In an area with a huge presence of the Kapu community, this wouldn’t have been possible without Pawan Kalyan.

The same can be said about Vishakhapatnam, where a mild mannered Haribabu of the BJP handed out a stunning defeat to Y.S. Vijayamma, mother of Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy and the frontrunner for the Vishakhapatnam Lok Sabha seat. Pawan campaigned heavily against Vijayamma. Some are attributing the surprising performance of the TDP and BJP in Telangana to Pawan Kalyan’s strong fan base in the Nizam area.

What if all these risks backfired? What if the TDP + BJP combine failed to come to power in Seemandhra? The fallout would have been quite bad for the star actor. Comparisons with his brother Chiranjeevi would have been inevitable. Backlash from some sections of the Mega Family fan base would have been severe. The repercussions of his targeted attacks on KCR would have been felt. Pawan Kalyan was mentally prepared for all this, but it would have been a big big mess.

Nothing succeeds like success. Pawan Kalyan’s popularity has now soared to new heights and he has become the darling of the Nandamuri fans as well. Many Telugu Desam party workers have been posting messages of gratitude on social networking sites. For Pawan Kalyan’s next film, he will enjoy the support of two very formidable fan bases – the Mega Fans and the Nandamuri Fans.

This success also gives Pawan Kalyan a good platform from which to build his Jana Sena Party. There will be no dearth of volunteers and supporters. Both the BJP government in Delhi and the Telugu Desam government in Andhra Pradesh will support his initiatives and interests.

Pawan Kalyan is a very happy man. He has every right to feel that way.
