I am very happy to announce that the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly acted in unison to unanimously pass the Bill amending the AP Public Employment (Regulation of Age of Superannuation) Act, 1984, increasing the retirement age of government employees to 60 years from 58.

As much as our State needs youthful exuberance, it also needs the knowledge, skills and wisdom of senior Government employees. There is a significant improvement in the average life expectancy when compared to that of 1984 (when the Act was framed). As per the World Health Organisation, the average Indian life expectancy is 65 years. The age of retirement of Central government employees was also raised from 58 to 60 years in 1998.

Our government is employee-friendly. Enhancement of retirement age is the first step to create a favourable environment for the employees to work with the Government to develop the new State. I give my word to government employees that several other welfare measures such as health insurance, houses for retired employees are already in the pipeline. I will work in the direction of getting every government employee to own a house by the time he/she retires.

Also, the State is indebted to them for coming out and protesting against the bifurcation of the State. I will reward them by treating that period as “Holiday” and ensure continuity in service.
