Among many architectural treasures in Rome, this castle is less known worldwide. Commissioned by the Roman Emperor Hadrian, the castle, built in 139 AD, served as his mausoleum. Later it was used by the popes. Today it is a tourist attraction, valued as an architectural and historic monument. The castle houses a museum: a collection of historic artifacts, works of art, sculptures, ceramics from various eras is being exhibited. The papal apartments are among the most impressive and favorite. Visitors are also very pleased to admire the panoramic views of central Rome, that open from the top of the castle. Why to go there? The glorious and most famous European castle is a jewel of Bavaria. It was built in the 19th century by the personal fortune of Ludwig II of Bavaria. The aristocrat was also known as the “Fairytale King” – he appreciated arts, especially the work of composer Richard Wagner. The palace was built to honor the latter. The castle looks like from a fairytale from the inside out! The Neo-Romanesque palace’s interior design often adopts the themes and characters from Wagner’s operas. And the landscape is breathtaking: situated in the Bavarian Alps, the amazing panorama of the Alps and Hohenschwangau valley opens from the palace. The iconic castle is a symbol of Romanticism. It has also inspired Walt Disney: the Sleeping Beauty Castle is based on the Neuschwanstein palace. The castle has served as an idyllic retreat for private Ludwig II. But after his death it was opened for public. Since then the palace has become the main German attraction and the most recognizable structure in the world. Why to go there? The lake is situated in the Julian Alps – a mountain range in Slovenia – and is famous for the picturesque surroundings and historic buildings. On the Bled Island in the middle of the lake a church dedicated to the Assumption of Mary was built in the 17th century. It is a popular church among Slovenians, tourists and newlyweds. Found in an elevation of 1,578 m (5,177 ft), the lake is a real mountain jewel, protected by UNESCO. Oeschinen is fed by a fresh underground water and is rich of various fish. Fishing is a popular activity here, especially in winter, when the lake is covered by thick ice. The whole area is also love by hikers and skiers. The breathtaking landscape attracts many tourists all year round. In summer it is all green and flowery, suitable to have an exhilarating hike in a fresh alpine air, while in winter skiing, snowboarding and ice fishing attract winter lovers. The impressive bridge looks like a sunken corridor, as if the water has parted for the pedestrians. It is installed in a 17th century fort – Fort De Roovere. It was designed by RO & AD Architects, who had decided to make it that way, so it wouldn’t stand out in the historic fort complex. The bridge is made of Accoya wood, that is treated with anti-fungal coating, that enables the wood not to erode. And besides being really practical, the bridge makes this surprising impression of the water being divided. Why to go there? Discover elegant Dutch architecture. When to go there? Anytime, although summer is the warmest season. How to get there? Get there by train. The train lines are easily accessible and comfortable in the Netherlands.

And even more for the action loving travelers: golfers love Portsalon Golf Club, which is situated in the picturesque fields. Fanad Lighthouse and the Great Arch are among the most popular sites on the peninsula. And even Aurora can be spotted in this northern part of Ireland! Why to go there? Located in a small French village Chenonceaux, the palace is built on the River Cher. First built in the 15th century, then destroyed and rebuilt in the 16th, the palace had a lot of owners, including King Francis I of France. Today it belongs to Menier family, who owns a famous chocolate company. The family has restored the palace and its gardens. Today it is open for the public and Château de Chenonceau is the second most visited palace in France after Versailles. The late Gothic and early Renaissance styles define this beautiful palace. Why to go there? A perfect place to have a glimpse of a royal life. Beautiful surroundings. When to go there? The best time to visit is spring and summer, when the gardens blossom with colorful flowers. How to get there? Get there by train or drive taking A10 motorway. It is about 2.5 h drive from Paris.
