T Govt Beaming As Krishnapatnam Power Plant Begins Operations

HYDERABAD: The Telangana government is in an upbeat mood after the successful commissioning of the Krishnapatnam power plant from which it will get its due share of power.

“The Unit-1 of the plant has started generating 250 MW of power on Saturday and we except the generation to go up to 800 MW by September,” sources in the Telangana Energy department told Express.

According to the AP State Reorganisation Act, the power generated in both the states will be shared in the ratio 59:89::47:11 between Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.

Similarly, the government has also pinned its hopes on the Hinduja power plant in Visakhapatnam. The plant is expected to generate 1,050 MW of power by the end of December.

“As per the Reorganisation Act, we will get our due. We have explained Telangana’s version to the Centre. The central government is acting as a referee and we are expecting that justice will be done,” an official said.

The power problems of Telangana can be solved to a great extent if both the plants are fully operational.

As of now, the power shortage in Telangana is around 500 MW per day taking the deficit to around 16 million units (MU) a day. “If monsoon is good in July, the deficit is likely to reduce to six MU and We are competent to handle a 7-MU deficit,” officials sources said. The state  will become a power surplus if it gets its share from both the plants coupled with good rains.

Though the government was keen to make a bid for additional power but treaded a cautious path. “If we bid for 500 MW power and we get good rains, the state will become power surplus. But, we need money for that. We have to make a balancing act,” the sources said and added that the state would be financially burdened if they placed orders for power hastily.

Learning from C’garh Govt’s Experience

Meanwhile, the officials explained that the government’s plan for purchasing power from Chhattisgarh is a part of its long term strategy. Sources privy to the developments said the Chhattisgarh government set up the plants by taking loans from banks. “With no purchaseers, the general in several plants had come to a halt. Now even with most of the plants lying idle, the government is having to pay interest on the loans. Learning by the experience, the Telangana government will augment power supply in a steady demand-based manner, officials said.
