Bringing an end to the ordeal, 46 Indian nurses have returned to Kochi after being held in captivity by ISIS militants in the war torn Iraq. Kerala Chief Minister Oomen Chandy is present at the airport to receive the Indians returning from Iraq.

Relieved to have the nurses back in India, the Kerala CM said thanked the Narendra Modi government for ensuring the return of the Indian nurses from strife-hit Iraq. "The Centre has acted in complete understanding of the deep anxieties of Kerala. The Ministry of External Affairs and the Indian Embassy in Iraq have made sincere efforts in securing the release of the nurses. Our main focus was to see that the nurses come back home safely," Chandy said.

Minister of External Affairs General VK Singh also said that the government was working on the rescue of the Indians in Iraq and it paid off.

From Kochi, the special Air India flight will head to Hyderabad where nearly 70 passengers will deboard the plane.

The flight which carries 130 other passengers too, had left Erbil for India at around 4.30 am IST but was initially not allowed to land in Erbil. However, according to the Kerala CM, he spoke to Minister of External Affairs Sushma Swaraj and the matter was soon resolved.

The flight landed at the Mumbai airport on Saturday morning and thereafter flew to Kochi. From Kochi, the Special Air India flight is headed to Hyderabad where nearly 70 passengers will deplane after which the plane will move to Delhi.

The ordeal of the nurses, who were working at a hospital in Saddam Hussein's hometown of Tikrit, began when a swift ISIS (Islamic State for Iraq and Syria) offensive was launched on June 9. The nurses were moved out on Thursday against their will and detained in the militant-held city of Mosul, 250 km from Tikrit.

While some Indians have been brought from Iraq, the MEA has assured that the resources that went into freeing the nurses would be used in the case of others too.

"People are still in captivity and we are aware of the captors," said Akbaruddin. Without divulging any information on the efforts that went into the freeing of these 46 nurses, MEA said, "Anything we say may possibly impact other elements. So I won't say who we worked with and how we worked."

Nearly 1,500 Indian have registered to leave Iraq from the no-conflict zone. Already, about 1,000 Indian nationals have been given tickets to travel out of Iraq by the ministry.

There were about 10,000 Indians before the start of the serious strife between government troops and Sunni militants backed by al Qaida

Very happy to know they r safe.
I am closely following the iraq crisis.. What stood out was that none of the insurgent groups or ruling govt. have anything against Indian Nationals... Heck we can land our plane on Iran's soil with a short notice... There r a very few countries whom iran considers as their friends and we r one of them.
This incident just proves again that india has such a goodwill among the middle east nations no matter who they r.. Sunni, shia..
I salute and thank thise isis people for not harming our citizens. :)
