New Delhi A Mumbai-bound Air India flight was forced to make an emergency landing at Newark Airport in the US on Sunday seconds after take-off because of an engine fire. The Boeing 777 had 313 passengers on board.

Details of the emergency landing now available with NDTV show that the flight, AI 144, had a close shave. It took off from Newark at 4.24 pm and was just about 100 feet above the ground when the Air Traffic Controller sounded an alert that there were flames coming out of the left hand side engine.

The pilot followed standard operating procedures and reduced thrust to idle on that engine. He also turned back for the emergency landing with the aircraft fully loaded at 350 tonnes.

The plane circled over Newark on a single engine and over 100 tonnes overweight, before landing. As it landed, three tyres deflated.  :3D_Smiles:  :3D_Smiles:

At the airport, the fire department advised the pilot that the plane could not be moved and passengers were removed from the tarmac. There were no injuries reported and the passengers were later flown back to India.

Flights are designed to operate on single engine..its not a big deal

Most of the times single engine use chestaru..

just for this reason u cannot blame Air India

Losing Power in All Engines

The pilots don't have much choice if they lose power in all engines.  They're for sure going to have to land the plane.  But don't panic (and your pilots won't be panicking either). Statistically you have a very good chance of surviving such a situation.

If a plane loses all power, it does not then fall out of the sky. Instead it becomes a very big and rather clumsy glider, but it has the same controllability as with engines, although perhaps not quite as readily as before. It can still maneuver left and right, and can also vary its rate of descent, but it no longer can go up or stay flying level.

A plane can land without needing to use its engines. Gliders (sailplanes) do it all the time, and there is no reason why a passenger jet can not land without engine power as well.

Modern jets don't have sufficient batteries to supply power to the plane's hydraulics and control systems in the event of engine failure. However, an air driven generator will deploy into the airstream, and the air passing through its blades will spin this generator, enabling it to create some limited emergency power.

It is likely that the plane's cabin pressurization will also fail. This would be a gradual failure, and then you'd get to see the oxygen masks dropping down in front of you. There is ten to fifteen minutes of oxygen supply through this system, and by the time it was used up, the pilot will have smoothly glided the plane down to below 15,000 ft, at which point you'll no longer need the breathing masks.

Awesome.. Didnt know that the plane can land safely with both engines failing..
But if the plane is flying over a sea or over a land which is not good to land aflight, then we will be in trouble

I agree its not a big deal.. I am talking about what could the consequences have been ani.. As you know Air India lo travel chesedi mostly mana parents age valle, imagine how would they have felt when all this happenned and when they were evacuated from the flight using inflatable slides right on the tarmac.. I think thats the reason according to the rules of Air Travel at any point of time flight need to be with in range of 1-2 hours or at most 3 hrs from an airport to land in emergency.
