PANAJI: Goa has expressed its inability to host the National Games ahead of Kerala, and given the slow pace of development, there are possibilities that the National Games will not be staged here before 2015.

The IOA was taken aback on Thursday when Kerala informed the members that they will not be in a position to organize the Games before December 2013.

Kerala informed the Indian Olympic Association general body, which met under the chairmanship of acting president Vijay Kumar Malhotra in Delhi on Thursday, that it is unable to host the National Games before December 2013.

The infrastructure for the Games in Kerala is incomplete and Kerala have loads of other problems, the members were told. IOA president Vijay Kumar Malhotra then wondered whether Goa would be willing to step into Kerala's boots and fill the void, but the state has been grappling with its fair share of problems as well.

"No way can we host the National Games before Kerala. We are preparing for the Games with 2014 in mind," Sports Authority of Goa executive director V M Prabhudesai told TOI on Friday.

The National Games have been synonymous with delays and this fact was best demonstrated by Jharkhand which put off the event six times before finally hosting the Games early this year. The IOA was wiser after those frustrating delays and have now decided to form a committee that would tour the next three hosting states-Kerala, Goa and Chhattisgarh-and revise the dates.

"The run up to the National Games in Jharkhand was a disaster. Six dates were finalized before the Games actually took place. The IOA does not want such delays to occur again. So, a decision was taken to form a committee that would visit the organizing states, check the available infrastructure for itself and then see which state is best-prepared to organize the Games first," said a senior member of the IOA who attended the general body meeting.

The National Games were originally meant to be held once in two years, but the schedule has been faltering for the past couple of years. Guwahati hosted the Games five years after the 2002 Hyderabad Games, and Jharkhand stepped in only four years later. Goa, for the record, was allotted the National Games 2011 but with Kerala now dragging its feet, the delay could be inordinate.

The Goa Olympic Association did not have any representative at the IOA general body meeting on Thursday due to what has been termed as a "communication lapse".

When the 36th national games 2011 was allotted to Goa with the signing of an MoU between the Indian Olympic Association led by then Indian Olympic Association chairman Suresh Kalmadi and Goa chief minister Digambar Kamat, it was an opportunity for the state to develop a solid infrastructure for sports.

With the 34th national games to be held in Jharkand being postponed to 2011, Goa still had time to put in place a good sporting facility.

Kerala, which was to host the 35th national games has lagged behind too and expressed inability to host the games until 2013. And now Goa too expressing its inability shows lack of commitment on the part of the administration.

This would have been the best chance for Goa to show off its potential, but not a brick has been laid for the sports city to come up in Dhargal in Pernem taluka. What a shame.
