H1B Extension After 6 Years Ki I140

Hello,
H1B 6 years tarvata extension ki do we need have i140 approved with our current employer?
Or is it ok if our i140 is approved once already even though it was approved with an em-employer?
I have my i140 approved by my current employer but I will be laid off in Sept with the Microsoft layoffs. So I confused if I have to go for full time again or consultancy aa ani...please answer my above question as I can think based on it.

When you transfer your h1 to another company based on your approved h1 you can get 3yrs extension
