Telangana Grants Navy 2900 Acres Of Reserve Forest To Set Up Vlf Stati

The Navy will get 2900 acres of forest land in Dammagudem reserve forest at Pudur Village, Vikarabad Mandal in neighboring Ranga Reddy district for setting up a VLF station naval base after Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao gave his in-principle nod for allotment of the land today. 

“Satish Soni, the Vice Admiral, Eastern Naval Command, Visakhapatnam, met the Chief Minister in the Secretariat today and the latter agreed to extend all necessary cooperation to handover the land,” a Telangana government release said here.

Navy will pay Rs 115.06 crore towards compensatory afforestation and net present value of the land in due course, the release added.

A VLF Station would house very low frequency transmitters and is used to send encypted signals. Whereas a submarine on the surface can transmit and receive wireless messages just like a ship can, submerged submarines can only receive wireless messages on Very Low Frequency (VLF). VLF transmitters require huge antennae suspended high above the ground. These antennaes, in India, are developed by DRDO.

A couple of years ago, the Indian Navy had decided to set up a very low frequency (VLF) communication station near Hyderabad, due to its strategic location, and keep tabs on Arabian Sea, Bay of Bengal and Indian Ocean. Also, Hyderabad was chosen as the location as several defence organisations have their institutions in the city and surrounding areas. However, there were problems in identifying land.
