Dozens feared dead in Taiwan plane crash

 

(CNN) -- As many as 45 people are feared dead after a TransAsia Airways passenger plane crashed on one of Taiwan's Penghu islands Wednesday, Taiwan's Central News Agency reported.

At least nine other people were injured in the crash of the twin-engine turboprop plane, which happened outside Magong airport at about 7 p.m., CNA reported.

The cause of the crash wasn't immediately known.

More than 40 people are thought to have died in a passenger plane crash in Taiwan, according to Agence France Presse.

Local media reports put the death toll at 51, with 7 injuries.

The TransAsia Airways flight was reportedly trying to make an emergency landing.

The plane reportedly crashed into residential buildings on its way down, according to The Straits Times in Singapore.

The flight took off from Kaohsiung Siaogang Airport in Taiwan at about 5 p.m. local time and was flying to Penghu’s Magong Airport, according to the South China Morning Post.

Taiwanese officials told the newspaper that the plane caught fire after it landed "at the end of a runway." There were 58 people aboard the plane.

TransAsia Airways is a Taiwanese airline that makes mostly domestic flights.

MUMBAI: An Air India flight with 313 passengers onboard was forced to return to Newark Liberty International Airport on Sunday, after an engine on the Boeing 777 aircraft caught fire.

Within minutes after take-off the passengers and crew reported about the fire spreading along the outside of the left-hand side engine. There were reports that the aircraft had suffered a bird hit, but the airline spokesperson denied it. "The flight returned to Newark because of an engine problem. Passengers are being accommodated on different airlines and on our flight to Delhi," the spokesperson said.

Sources said that the commander of the said aircraft was forced to do an overweight landing. "In such an event some fuse plugs melt as brakes heat up," said a pilot.
