A Failure Helped Create The Nobel Peace Prize.

We don’t usually associate the Nobel Peace prize with failure. Yet one man’s concern with his own legacy led to the creation of these famous awards!

Alfred Nobel wasn’t known for being a very positive guy. In fact, he suffered from depression and was extremely solitary. But the man was actually brilliant. He created dynamite and managed his family’s oil company in Russia. Sadly, in 1888, Nobel’s brother, Ludvig, passed away. A newspaper company in France picked up the story, thinking it was actually Alfred who passed away, not Ludvig. So they printed Alfred’s obituary even though he was still alive!

When he got his hands on his own obituary, Nobel was quite disappointed with what he read. They condemned him for his work with creating dynamite and even went so far as to include this term, “Le marchand de la mort est mort,” which translates to “The merchant of death is dead.” Needless to say, Nobel was not thrilled with this seething review of his life. So he set aside the bulk of his estate to go towards the creation of the Nobel Peace prizes.

The failure of this French newspaper really helped spur Nobel to leave something good behind when he actually died. If they hadn’t failed, we might not have these famous prizes today. Their failure resulted in success!
