Harrisburg University Accreditation Probation

Harrisburg University of Science and Technology was placed on probation by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE) and has until March 2015 to solve the areas of concern. The MSCHE noted insufficient evidence to support compliance with Standard 3 (Institutional Resources) and Standard 14 (Assessment of Student Learning). Harrisburg University expects to work directly with representatives from the MSCHE over the next 9 months, and fully anticipates having the probation lifted in 2015. HU has made solving Middle States' concerns its top priority.

Q. Why has HU been placed on probation by Middle States? 
A. HU was placed on probation "because of insufficient evidence that the institution is currently in compliance with Standard 3 (Institutional Resources) and Standard 14 (Assessment of Student Learning)."

Q. Is HU still considered an accredited institution? 
A. HU maintains its accreditation status during the probation period. Details concerning HU's accreditation are available on the MSCHE website.

Q. When did HU first become an accredited institution?
A. 2009

Q. How often does the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (Middle States) accredit U.S. colleges and universities?
A. Middle States accreditation reviews are normally conducted every 5 or 10 years for previously accredited institutions.

Q. Is the probation a reflection on the academic quality of HU? A. No-the warning was issued to highlight improvements needed in HU's assessment processes and systems.

Q. How long will HU be on probation?
A. The normal maximum period for an institution to be on probation is two years, though an institution can have the probation lifted at the end of the first year. It is very rare for an institution not to have its probation lifted in the (maximum) two-year warning period.

Q. What must HU do to have its probation lifted?
A. By March 1, 2015, the university must submit a Monitoring Report that provides evidence documenting how the institution has achieved compliance with Standards 3 and 14. Later in March 2015, a small team of experts will visit Harrisburg University to follow up on the Monitoring Report. A recommendation to the MSCHE will be made following the visit.
