Spartan Posted July 31, 2014 Report Posted July 31, 2014 Indian wrestler Babita Kumari put on a stunning show to win the gold medal beating Canada's Brittanee Laverdure while Yogeshwasr Dutt got the better of Canada's Balfour in the finals on Thursday. Discus thrower Vikas Gowda won India's first gold medal from athletics in the 2014 Commonwealth Games at the Hampden Park Stadium. The 31-year-old Gowda converted the silver he had won four years ago in New Delhi in to the yellow metal with a best throw of 63.64 metres.
Spartan Posted July 31, 2014 Author Report Posted July 31, 2014 Cypriot Apostolos Parellis took the silver with 63.32m and Jamaican Jason Morgan held on to the bronze with a best throw of 62.34m. Babita won gold in the women's 55kg freestyle category while Dutt did India proud in the men's 65 kg category of the 2014 Commonwealth Games. The 24-year-old Babita, who had bagged the silver in the 2010 Commonwealth Games, won 9-2 against the 32-year-old Brittanee, who ended up injuring her finger during the bout. Babita dominated most of the proceedings and it was only in the last 15 seconds that Brittanne managed to open her scoring but by then it was all over. It was the fourth gold medal for India in wrestling. Olympic bronze medallist Yogeshwar Dutt won the fifth wrestling gold medal for India beating Jevon Balfour of Canada in the final of the men's freestyle 65kg category in the 2014 Commonwealth Games at the SECC Hall on Thursday. Yogeshwar was declared the winner on grounds of technical superiority after he took a 10-0 lead within 1.53 minutes of the first period. It was also the second gold medal of the day after Babita Kumari's triumph in the women's freestyle 55kg category.
